What is a Notary Public, and when do you need one?

A Notary Public is an independent legal professional - one of the oldest branches of the legal profession - authorised to authenticate documents for use in foreign countries. Unlike a solicitor's certification, a notarial act carries international recognition.

You may require a notary when buying property abroad, granting a power of attorney in another jurisdiction, establishing a foreign company, or submitting personal documents to an overseas authority.

How It Works

  1. Initial Enquiry

Contact us by telephone or email. Describe your document and its intended use. We will advise on the notarial act required and what identification you will need to bring.

  2. Document Review

Send us copies of your documents in advance where possible. We review them to ensure they are in the correct form and identify any issues before your appointment.

  3. Notarisation Appointment

Attend our London office with your originals and identification. The notary will verify your identity, witness signatures, and execute the notarial act.

  4. Apostille & Despatch

Where required, we obtain the Apostille certificate from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office and despatch your documents by tracked delivery.

In Their Own Words

"I was buying a flat in Lisbon and needed a power of attorney notarised and apostilled inside a week - my Portuguese lawyer had warned me it could take much longer. Mr Harrington had everything back to me in three days. No drama."

C.W. - Private Client, Fulham

"We needed a statutory declaration for a French visa application at short notice. I telephoned on a Tuesday morning, was seen that afternoon, and the completed document was with me by Thursday. I had no idea it could be that straightforward."

D.F. - Academic, Bloomsbury

"We send corporate powers of attorney to this office regularly - UAE, Hong Kong, Brazil. The turnaround is reliable, the fee estimates are accurate, and nothing gets lost. That reliability matters more than anything else when you are working across time zones."

P.O. - Head of Legal, Financial Services Firm
